Oktoberfest 2010

image

It wasn’t really planned long in advance but rather a spontaneous trip that brought my friends and me to the 177th Oktoberfest which is also celebrated since 200 years (it got cancelled on several years, in particular during wartime). Those kind of weekends always end up being fun, especially with that setting of it being the last Oktoberfest weekend of the year and beautiful weather: You can imagine that it was packed!

The Entrance

7 Million “Maß” of beer have been drunk in total, that one above was my first, drunk on the terrace of the Schottenhammel tent! That Spaten is delicious with its slight sweetness – it’s like finding a friend you have lost contact with for a year (In fact, I’ve been to Oktoberfest those past 3 years).

Soon enough, you have to follow those signs! I bet you can guess where they lead…

Our next stop brought us into the Hacker-Pschorr Braurösl tent. You have to be there to know how it is, I couldn’t really describe it.

Sun slowly sets on the Wiesn.

Their beer is equally good, maybe a tad more dry albeit lighter than the Spaten.

Next morning, our first Maß at the Fischer-Vroni terrace. The Augustiner beer is even a bit more dry than the Hacker-Pschorr. It’s the only beer at the fest that is still tapped from wood casks, does that influence the taste?

We then directly headed into the Spaten Ochsenbraterei tent! It was packed, of course and the band was playing loud!

image
The name Ochsenbraterei stems from the whole ox that is being grilled on a spit there. This specimen is named Rudi and weighs 575 kg, a little more than half a ton. During the 2 weeks of Oktoberfest about 100 oxes are being grilled, incredible!

My much loved Spaten Beer was also on the menu..

image
…as was the ox, brought by those hard working guys. Did you know they earn 5 digit wages over those 2 weeks… they deserve em.

image
Pretzels are part of the deal of course. In Bavaria you have to say “Brezn”!

image
With that atmosphere, the party is picking up very quick!

Time to leave. There’s always a next Oktoberfest!
